What Mastectomy Supplies Are Covered by Insurance in Michigan?

Thanks to the protections like the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) and Michigan’s own insurance mandates, most health plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers, cover essential post-mastectomy products when prescribed by a physician.

Covered items typically include:

  • Mastectomy Bras: Soft, pocketed cups hold breast forms securely and reduce pressure points for all-day comfort.
  • Breast Prostheses (Forms): Available in different sizes, shapes, and materials (including lightweight silicone and foam) to restore natural balance and posture.
  • Post-Surgical Camisoles: Gentle compression garments with drain management pockets for immediate post-op comfort.
  • Compression Garments: Help manage swelling and promote lymphatic drainage.
  • Medical Wigs: Often covered when hair loss occurs due to chemotherapy or radiation treatment. While CareLinc does not carry wigs directly, we’re happy to provide multiple trusted resources to help you find one that’s right for you.

Most insurers allow multiple bras and at least one prosthesis per year. A prescription from your physician is usually required, so be sure to request one during your follow-up visit.

When to Be Fitted for Post-Mastectomy Supplies

Many women wonder how soon they can be fitted after surgery. While every recovery timeline is unique, here are some general guidelines:

  • Immediately After Surgery: Post-surgical camisoles can usually be worn right away to provide gentle compression and hold drains in place.
  • 2–6 Weeks Post-Surgery: Once incisions have healed and drains are removed, most women can be fitted for prostheses and mastectomy bras.
  • Ongoing Adjustments: Weight changes, scar healing, or additional treatments may affect fit. Regular refittings help ensure continued comfort and support.

Your physician can let you know when it’s safe to schedule a fitting, and CareLinc’s certified mastectomy fitters will ensure you feel comfortable and confident every step of the way.

FAQs About Mastectomy Supplies

Does Medicare cover mastectomy bras and breast forms?

Yes. Medicare typically covers up to four 3 bras every 3 months (or rather 4 times a year) so 12 total mastectomy bras per year and one breast prosthesis every 2 years with a doctor’s prescription.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Insurance providers, including Medicare and Medicaid, require a physician’s prescription and documentation of medical necessity to cover mastectomy bras, breast forms, and related post-surgical items. However, if you prefer to private pay (self-pay), you can purchase these supplies at any time without a physician’s prescription. This gives you flexibility to get what you need, when you need it, even outside of your insurance coverage

What insurance plans does CareLinc accept for mastectomy products?

CareLinc accepts a variety of insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Priority Health, Priority Health Medicare, and even WellCare. Our team will verify your coverage and help guide you through the process to make it as simple as possible. And if your plan doesn’t cover these items, we can discuss adorable self-pay options or connect you with resources that can help you.

Can I get refitted later?

Absolutely. We recommend refitting annually or anytime your body changes due to weight fluctuations, healing, or additional treatments.

Do I have to come in person?

Yes, an in-person visit is required when using insurance. Most mastectomy supplies must be dispensed following an in-person assessment and professional fitting. As part of the insurance process, your physician will also need to complete a face-to-face visit. We truly look forward to seeing you and ensuring you receive the best fit, comfort, and care possible. Our team will work directly with you to make the most of your personal situation to provide guidance, support, and solutions tailored to your unique needs.
