Diabetic Shoes & Custom Fitting Service

Diabetes can affect circulation and reduce sensation in the feet, making it harder to notice blisters, sores, and pressure points before they become serious problems. Properly fitted diabetic shoes and protective inserts help distribute pressure, reduce friction, and protect your feet from skin breakdown.

Our diabetic shoe-fitting service helps you find footwear designed to support your foot health and comfort. Our team measures your feet, evaluates your footwear needs, and uses foot-scanning technology to help provide properly fitted shoes and custom inserts.

What You Need Before Scheduling a Diabetic Shoe Fitting

Before scheduling a diabetic shoe-fitting appointment at CareLinc, we must receive and approve the required documentation.

Required documentation:

  • Prescription/referral from the doctor (if applicable): The process may begin when a patient visits CareLinc or when we receive a prescription from their doctor.

  • Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN): Must be completed and signed by a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) to be billable. The CMN is only valid within six months of the foot evaluation.

  • Additional medical records (for Medicare patients): Supporting chart notes are required.

After the CMN and any required Medicare paperwork have been returned and approved, the patient can be contacted to schedule their shoe-fitting appointment.

Note: Appointment requirements vary by location. Some CareLinc branches require scheduled appointments, while others may accept walk-ins. Our Ann Arbor and Madison Heights locations do not have diabetic shoe fittings at this time.

What to Expect During Your Diabetic Shoe Fitting

Our team will work with you to find diabetic footwear that supports your comfort and foot health. During your appointment, you can expect:

  • Foot Measurements: We’ll measure your feet using a Brannock device to help determine the proper shoe size.

  • Foot Evaluation: We’ll ask questions about your foot health and assess the condition of your feet.

  • Foot Scanning: We’ll use an iPad to scan your feet to help create custom inserts designed for your needs.

  • Cost Estimate: We’ll review the estimated out-of-pocket cost based on the insurance information available to us. Your final cost may vary depending on your coverage, deductible, and coinsurance.

What happens next? Once your shoes and custom inserts are ordered, they typically arrive in 7–10 business days. We’ll contact you when they’re ready for pickup. For insurance purposes, the patient must pick up and try on the shoes in person to confirm proper fit.
